How to deal with stress & anxiety during a pandemic.

We’re in the middle of a worldwide pandemic, with cities and even entire countries under lockdown. It's very normal to get stressed in this COVID-19 crisis. People often get stressed about what’s going to happen next. For many, stress and anxiety can be on a different level. Constant stress and anxiety can lead to other health problems like stress headaches, so it's better to keep a lid on and make sure you don't over-stress. Here are a few tips on how you can manage it

Don't get obsessed with news

It's very important to stay informed during a world pandemic. But there's a difference between staying informed and obsessing over information. Don't read and watch everything that is available, it is only going to make matters worse if you already have an anxiety problem. There's also a lot of misinformation circling around the outbreak, so it's better to maintain a distance from it.

  • Stick to trustworthy sources

  • Limit how often you check for updates

  • Restrict yourself from the overuse of media

  • Ask someone reliable to share important updates

  • Be careful of what you share

Don’t focus on things you can’t control

We’re in the middle of a massive outbreak. A lot of things are out of control, be it how long the pandemic lasts, other people's behavior etc. But it's better to not pay heed to any such questions/queries. It's better to concentrate on personal things and keep aside the anxiety. The fear of what might happen next is no good, you’d rather pay attention to personal care so you can keep the virus at bay. Take steps to reduce your risk of getting infected by:

  • Washing your hands frequently

  • Staying indoors as much as possible

  • Avoid gatherings of 10 or more people

  • Avoiding all non-essential shopping and travel

  • Keeping 6 feet (2 metres) of distance between yourself and others when you go outdoors

  • Ensuring your immune system is healthy

Stress induced headaches

It’s pretty normal to be concerned about the wellbeing of you and your loved ones, or what happens if you are tested positive for COVID-19. While these possibilities can be scary, taking steps proactively can ensure stress relief. Stressing yourself over countless possibilities can give you stress headaches. There are two types of stress headaches:

  • Episodic tension headaches

  • Chronic tension headaches

These headaches can last anywhere between 30 minutes to a few days. The episodic headaches start mildly and pick up gradually, often in the middle of the day. Whereas the chronic ones, come and go and last a longer duration. While some headaches can have links to an injury, infection, a surgery or health condition, the causes of a regular headache can be different

  • Stress or anxiety

  • Insufficient sleep

  • Hunger

  • Foods like alcohol, food that contain MSG, processed food, etc.

  • Need for new/upgrading glasses

  • Fatigue

  • Smoke

  • Certain smells

  • Sunlight or flashing lights

  • Certain medications

  • Menstrual cycles

  • New routines in lifestyle

  • Travel
